This three-day, 24-hour course is designed to address the minimum training requirements of 29 CFR 1910.120 (q) (6) (iii) for incident first responders at the hazardous materials technician level who will be performing offensive control actions.

 The course is presented in a combination lecture/discussion and practical exercise format.

 Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  •  Describe basic chemical and toxicological terminology and behavior. 
  • Identify and use references to determine the hazards of specific products.  
  • Recognize properties and toxic effects of hazardous materials and identify exposure guidelines.  
  • Implement a system of incident management and incident command techniques. 
  • Identify and describe the roles within a hazardous materials incident command system. 
  • Properly identify, select, use, and care for specialized chemical protective clothing.  
  • Select and use atmospheric monitoring equipment.  
  • Select and use equipment for the field identification of unknown products.  
  • Perform control, containment, and/or confinement operations.  
  • Decontaminate personnel and equipment.  
  • Conduct basic incident termination activities.

 Successful completion of this course is achieved by: active participation in field and tabletop exercises, demonstrating proficiency in this requisite skills, and passing a written examination with a minimum score of 70%.

 Students completing the course in a satisfactory manner will receive a Certificate of Completion and a letter documenting completion of this OSHA required training for their personnel file.
